About ceramicist & artist Leanne Culy
I feel that I’m never alone when I’m making my work, as if Mother Nature were there beside me.
After spending a month at Driving Creek in the Coromandel in 2022, I realised I was entering a new creative phase in my life, and that my work was beginning to shift
Not only did I want to paint but I knew I was going to make clay a huge part of my practice.
I’ve always had a strong environmental sentiment in my art, as the health of the natural world is paramount. The tree is a symbol of hope and healing, a feeling and notion I am driven to celebrate both consciously and subconsciously.
I feel that I’m never alone when I’m making my work, as if Mother Nature were there beside me.
If a piece of my work you like has sold, you can contact me to discuss a commission. I’d love to talk to you.
The act of cutting down a tree is traumatic for me.
The sound of the chainsaw sends me out to hunt it down and ask why?
I fight for the trees, especially through my work.
In my mind each branch is special, each trunk a reminder of the immense power trees can have for us, how without them we wouldn't exist.
I’m driven to make work that says something important, each piece is not just a sculpture or a vessel, but a monument to the trees.
I took up ceramic modelling in 2020 and soon realised this was a medium that was going to stay with me, it’s in my blood.
I follow in the footsteps of my mother and uncle who where both potters and although I never met my mother, I feel there is a deeper connection now.
I have the earth on my hands and my head in the trees, so I’m happy.
I hope you like my work.
